Delapointe is a Quebec-based Canadian company working to contribute to the well-being and financial self-sufficiency of female shea butter producers in the developing world. Since 2002, Delapointe has imported and distributed Fair Trade Certified shea butter from the Women Producer's Union of Shea Butter Products of the Sissili and Ziro provinces (UGPPK-S/Z). UGPPK-S/Z aims to improve the lives of rural women and their families through the production and sale of shea butter through the Fair Trade network. Since its creation, the union has trained nearly 1,800 women in methods of work that improve both the efficiency and sanitary conditions of the shea butter production. With the development premium earned with each Fair Trade kilo sold on the international market, the union has been investing in the community. Over the last few years, more than 300 women have been taught basic literacy, 80 HIV orphans have received school supplies and over 500 women producers have been educated about the risks associated with HIV/AIDS. In addition, they have also constructed a childcare facility so that older girls can attend school.
