OTICART provides export, marketing and quality control services to a number of small workshops around Nairobi, Kenya. In 1995, Claytone Ombasyi, a Christian businessman, started OTICART to help local artisans connect with international markets. A quiet man of integrity, Claytone stays in close touch with artisan groups, encouraging them to take pride in their work and to consider their products a reflection of themselves. Artisan groups speak highly of him: he provides helpful advice and guidance, and clearly states his expectations of quality work. Depending on their circumstances, these small groups provide a variety of advantages to artisans: some offer training in wood carving while others provide short-term, zero-interest loans.
