Located near Mombasa, Kenya's second largest city, Bombolulu provides employment and numerous other benefits to adults who are blind or physically disabled and who would otherwise have virtually no chance of employment in the mainstream labour market. Bombolulu began as a rehabilitation project sponsored by the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya. Benefits provided through Bombolulu include health care, assistance with school fees, retirement benefits, trade union membership and a secure monthly income. The workers have formed their own savings and loan co-operative enabling them to borrow money whenever they need it. What once began as a charitable project has now become a self-sustaining enterprise.
