Based in Kisumu, a city of 800,000 with high unemployment and underemployment rates, the Kisumu Innovation Centre of Kenya (KICK) focuses on creating employment opportunities for disadvantaged artisans working in the Jua Kai sector. Jua Kai is the Swahili name for the informal "hot sun" workshops in outdoor locations that use limited tools and work space. Since 2005, KICK has been an independent company with artisans holding 20 percent of company shares. Artisan benefits also include loans for school fees or emergencies, training, counseling, product development and design help. KICK buys raw materials and pays artisans per completed piece. In order to encourage innovation, artisans who create designs receive a percentage of sales for that design.
