Golden Palm was founded with the goal of creating employment opportunities in rural areas of Sri Lanka where jobs are rare. Golden Palm has woodworking and painting workshops in numerous villages. Artisans receive worker's compensation, pension contributions and assistance with schooling costs. Fair wages enable families to improve their standards of living with better food, clothing and housing. Rather than thatched houses, most have been able to move to brick homes with galvanized steel roofs. Profits from the business are reinvested in new machinery, tools and training to improve working conditions and create more jobs. A percentage is also placed in a welfare fund used to help families during times of hardship.
