Get Paper Industr (GPI) is a cooperative of 125 artisans who make paper in the traditional manner using innovative materials such as recycled waste paper and cotton, banana tree stems, cornhusks, water hyacinth and jute. Artisans speak glowingly of the difference that GPI has made in their lives. Artisans are paid fairly and also receive free lunch, health benefits, pension funds and a share in company profits. GPI has worked with the community to plant 2000 trees. A “Send Your Daughter to School” campaign was initiated in 1994 and now more than 125 girls receive scholarships. Funds from GPI have been used to build five schools. GPI also supports extensive AIDS awareness activities. GPI uses non-toxic dyes and has built a wastewater treatment plant.
