Candela Peru provides indigenous people with a living while helping to preserve the rainforest against "slash-and-burn" logging, farming and mining practices. The organization works with over 270 Brazil nut gatherers and their families who live along the Madre de Dios River in the Peruvian rainforest – an area known for having the greatest diversity of plant and animal species on earth. Nut gatherers are trained in sustainable forest resource management and export procedures, and have a 5-year agreement with Conservation International to work on protection issues. Candela Peru continues to develop markets for both nut oil and whole brazil nuts, and has come up with innovative ideas, such as using "waste" pods to create scented candles.
