Sasha represents more than 5,000 artisans in some 100 workshops, 70% of whom are women, using a business model which aims to help artisans develop self-sufficiency and reliable income. Sasha offers design services and training in business and management skills, empowering artisans to run businesses independently. Sasha focuses primarily on co-operatives in eastern India, with 90% of products coming from tribal and ethnic groups in West Bengal, Orissa, and Bihar. For many of Sasha’s artisans, handicraft production is the main source of income. Sasha strives to enable artisan groups to become economically viable while revitalizing dying handicraft traditions such as leather embossing, block and silkscreen printing, embroidery, jewellery making and Dhokra lost-wax metal casting. Sasha’s artisans use natural and environmentally-friendly materials, and are encouraged to set up effluent treatment plants to prevent environmental damage.
