Community Development Bethesda (CD Bethesda) is an outreach unit of Bethesda Hospital, the oldest hospital in Yogyakarta. The handicraft production unit was founded in 1988 to improve living conditions in the community and to raise funds for health care programs. Bethesda's holistic approach includes building healthy, prosperous and self-reliant communities. The craft program runs on principles of Fair Trade and hosts a training session once a year to reinforce Fair Trade practices. CD Bethesda promotes the use of environmentally sustainable raw materials: many workshops use recycled materials such as coconut shell and aluminum. Over 30 workshops represent 150 artisans who create handcrafted items in wood, leather, bamboo, ceramic, metal, batik and stone.
