Lao Sericulture is a not-for-profit silk farm in northern Laos that creates income-generation opportunities through the production of silk and mulberry-related products. In partnership with over 200 village families, the organization specializes in the production of naturally-dyed handmade silk. In addition to growing mulberry trees and fostering traditional silkworm rearing, reeling, weaving and natural dyeing in villages, Lao Sericulture also provides training, tools and a market for sales and distribution. From the growing of mulberry trees to the creation of natural dyes, handcrafted silk production utilizes local labour, knowledge and resources which in turn, encourage village self-sufficiency and productivity. Through their brand name, “Mulberries,” Lao Sericulture offers delicious mulberry teas and beautifully-woven silk shawls, scarves and wall-hangings.
