Tagua Jungle Necklace

Bold and beautiful. Slivers of tagua nuts are dyed in vibrant shades of exotic jungle flowers and strung on a braided cord. Also known as “vegetable ivory,” tagua is produced by a palm-like tree in South America. Tagua nut’s grain is close and very hard, resembling the finest ivory. The nuts fall to the ground when mature so harvesting doesn’t damage the trees. Cultural tradition and forest preservation combine in the use of this renewable resource. Made in Ecuador.

About the Artisan

The work of Camari enables craftspeople and farmers, or “campesinos,” to remain in their communities instead of leaving to find scarce work in the cities.

One of the first things I saw when I approached the locked jewelry case, was this phenomenally colored and beautifully designed necklace! The Tagua pieces do feel exactly like ivory...but it is the rainbow of colors and the way this piece falls around one's neck which make it a rainbow of wearable beauty..!
